Visit the Met’s modern collection with an art educator and finally attack the question, “Why is this art?”
- Jen Oleniczak is an artist and museum educator who enjoys making art accessible
- Explore the Met’s modern artwork while learning how to describe and understand it
- Discuss, debate and resolve the questions you’ve always wanted to ask about what defines modern art
We’ve all been there: seeing a piece of famous artwork and having no idea why it’s famous, or even why it’s art. Now it’s finally OK to have the conversation about why a nearly blank canvas is considered art, or how a canvas drenched in splattered paint falls into the same category.
Artist and museum educator Jen Oleniczak has worked at almost every major museum in NYC. She always has a fun factoid or scandalous story on hand to help make the art world accessible, and her background in improv comedy means she’s not afraid to laugh at anything.
Join Jen for a no-holds-barred adventure through the modern and contemporary galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. View the work of artists like Pollock, Rothko, Smith, Chamberlain and Picasso, while Jen shares engaging stories about their lives. Indulge in exciting conversation about why this is, in fact, art, as you discern the nuances of the genre and put any nagging doubts to rest.

Kristin ToldneasTHANK YOU! Jen gave us all a super trip and had lots of info and sharing all the time. Me and my friends LOVED it!!!
Debbie ScottThe host Jen was very friendly, informative, professional and enthusiastic about the topic. She was also very accepting of the various ideas presented by all members of the tour. My husband and I felt we gained an understanding of how to appreciate modern and contemporary art, so found it most worthwhile and enjoyable.
Athena BoncanJen was a personable, warm and engaging host. She has a quality about her that puts everyone at ease. She has a great knowledge of and was able to share interesting backstories of the famous modern and contemporary artists. The two hour tour went by like a breeze, she encouraged conversations which made the experience richer and memorable. The Met is the best museum in the world and this tour is a must.
Fern RicciThis tour was a gift to my husband from me and our children, 19 year old boy/girl twins. We choose this tour because we all love various forms of art, but do not always understand why some more contemporary pieces are considered art. Jen met us exactly when and where she stated in her confirmation e-mail. Jen encouraged us to make the tour a conversation among all of us, not a lecture on her part. She shared her insights, answered all of our questions, and took all of our interests into account when determining which pieces to discuss. All of us were actively engaged the entire two hours, which went by way too quickly. We would recommend this tour to anyone who has any interest in learning about modern and contemporary art.
Damon DouglasJen started the tour with, "How do you see this? What does it mean to you?" Her approachable style allowed us to appreciate the art on our terms and in our way. She guided us through a conversation, not a lecture.
Nick GrayJen was incredibly engaging. I loved her tour. She was able to relate the works with my limited history and understanding of art. My friend Mark was also on the tour. We both loved her conversation style. It was a fun experience.
