Discover a Jazzfest and Fishfry at a Brooklyn Brownstone
  • Debbie McClain owns a Bedford-Stuyvesant bed-and-breakfast
  • Retreat to a time gone by with an evening of intimate music in an elegant 19th-century brownstone
  • Enjoy live performances under the direction of bassist Eric Lemon, and exclusive early access to meet the musicians

In the 1940's, one didn’t head to Manhattan for the real jazz scene. Instead, those in the know went to Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. At that time, the neighborhood held about 20 clubs that housed greats like Miles Davis, Max Roach and Hank Mobley. But as the area changed before the 80's, the jazz clubs fizzled out in favor of a different generation.

Debbie McClain, owner of the Sankofa Aban bed-and-breakfast, is looking to revive the local salon scene of the 19th century with a weekend night jazz session, along with her jazz-partner string musician Eric Lemon. Both of them value authenticity and selectiveness when deciding who to allow into the room and what to serve up in sound, so you won’t hear any amps or be presented with anything but the best here. This is a weekend night in the neighborhood: intimate, classic, acoustic and delicious. Plain and simple.

Step into another era for a magical evening of music when Debbie brings you behind-the-scenes at this underground night. You’ll get there early to meet the world-class performers and hear stories of music, the brownstone, and the community before taking a seat for the jazz sound experience of a lifetime. The first set wraps up around 10:45, after which you're invited to snack on Debbie's favorite fishfry for the intermission, and stay as long as the music is moving you during a late-night open mic.

While the stated end-time is 11pm, there's an open mic segment that goes on till 1am that you can stay for at no extra charge. This event is not BYOB. The meal is served at 10:30pm, so make sure you eat dinner before.
